A Workshop for Teachers on Science Playwriting Using Archival Material

We are excited to announce a Science Play-writing Workshop for Teachers facilitated by the Archives in Education Programme at Archives at NCBS, located at the National Centre for Biological Sciences, Bengaluru. We invite teachers from across Karnataka to apply for a unique workshop that brings together theatre, science education, and archival storytelling. This program is made possible through generous support from TNQ Foundation.

 

  • Location: Archives at NCBS, Bengaluru (with both in-person and remote sessions)

  • Language: Kannada/English

  • Travel and accommodation support will be provided for participants from outside Bengaluru.

  • Mentorship and archival access will be fully supported by Archives at NCBS

  • Only open to teachers who teach in schools in Karnataka.

  • Number of positions: 5

  • Last date to apply: 15 July 2025 -- Extended to 17 July 2025.

  • Workshop & Mentorship Period: For three weeks starting from the 2nd week of August, 2025. Tentative Dates: Initial meeting (online) with selected candidates  - 1st week of August, In-person workshop at Archives at NCBS - 11-14 August, Online follow-up meetings - 18-22 August, Last date for final submission of play - 31 August, 2025.

About the Workshop

With an aim to bridge the perceived gap between the 'two cultures' of doing science and the arts, this workshop invites teachers to approach science with inquisitiveness, communicate with creative clarity, and thoughtfully consider its ethical and societal implications. We believe that science and art belong to everyone, without exception. 

Participants will engage with historical records in the Archives, from field notes and photographs to letters and oral histories, and explore how these fragments of the past can inspire science plays.

About the Archives: 

The Archives at NCBS (https://archives.ncbs.res.in) is a public collecting centre for the history of science in contemporary India. It has over 350,000 processed objects across over 55 collections in various forms, ranging from paper-based manuscripts to negatives to photographs, books, fine art, audio recordings, scientific equipment, letters, and field and lab notes. The 2000-square-feet state-of-the-art physical centre at NCBS includes space for research, processing, exhibitions, recording, and a leading-edge storage facility with monitors for temperature, light, humidity, air quality, water, fire, pests, and noise. The holdings include the papers of the molecular biologist and co-founder of NCBS, Obaid Siddiqi, TSG Sastry, a physicist who worked on the Thumba rocket programme, KS Krishnan, the renowned physicist who founded the National Physical Laboratory, Leslie Coleman, an early 20th century agricultural scientist in Mysore state, and the renowned agricultural scientist, MS Swaminathan. Why Archives at NCBS?

The Archives at NCBS is home to letters, photographs, diaries, field notes, and oral histories that trace the evolution of modern science in India. From forgotten experiments to personal struggles, these stories offer rich material for theatrical exploration, especially for teachers who wish to make science more engaging and emotionally meaningful through creative approaches.

Who Can Apply?

  • Teachers from any grade and subject area (not limited to science).

  • Must be based in any district of Karnataka.

  • Must be comfortable reading and writing in Kannada and English.

  • Even if you are new to play-writing, you are welcome to apply. Prior experience in play-writing  is not mandatory, though prior involvement in theatre will be considered an added advantage.

  • Applicants are expected to have a strong  interest in the intersection of science, performance, and its historical context.

What to Expect ?

  • Five teachers will be selected through this open call.

  • Each teacher will be paired with a mentor - an experienced theatre practitioner or science educator. 

  • Over the course of one month (in-person and online interactions), each pair will co-create a science play inspired by archival materials.

  • Participants will engage in writing exercises, archival exploration, collaborative learning.

  • Travel to NCBS, Bangalore and accommodation on campus will be provided.

 ಶಿಕ್ಷಣ, ರಂಗಭೂಮಿ ಮತ್ತು  ಇತಿಹಾಸದ ಆರ್ಕೈವ್ ದಾಖಲಾತಿಗಳ  ಕಥಾನಕಗಳನ್ನು  ಒಂದೇ ವೇದಿಕೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಒಗ್ಗೂಡಿಸುವ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನ ಮಾಡುವ ಆಶಯದಿಂದ ಶಿಕ್ಷಕರಿಗಾಗಿ ವಿಜ್ಞಾನ ನಾಟಕ ರಚನಾ ಕಮ್ಮಟವನ್ನು ನಡೆಸಲಾಗುತ್ತಿದೆ. ಇದು ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ನ್ಯಾಷನಲ್ ಸೆಂಟರ್ ಫಾರ್ ಬಯೋಲಾಜಿಕಲ್ ಸೈನ್ಸಸ್ (NCBS) ನಲ್ಲಿರುವ Archives at NCBS‌ ನ Archives in Education Programme ಆಯೋಜಿಸಿದೆ.  ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದ ಯಾವುದೇ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ, ಶಾಲಾ ಶಿಕ್ಷಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿರುವ ಆಸಕ್ತ ಶಿಕ್ಷಕರು ಈ ಕಮ್ಮಟದಲ್ಲಿ ಭಾಗವಹಿಸಲು ಅರ್ಜಿ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸಬಹುದು. ಎನ್ ಸಿ ಬಿ ಎಸ್ ಆರ್ಕೈವ್ ನಲ್ಲಿ ದಾಖಲಾಗಿರುವ ವಿವಿಧ ಆಕರಗಳನ್ನು ಆಧರಿಸಿ ನಾಟಕ ರಚಿಸುವುದು ಇದರ ಮುಖ್ಯ ಉದ್ದೇಶ.‌

ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಶಿಕ್ಷಕರಾಗಿ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿರುವವರಿಗೆ ಮಾತ್ರ  ಈ ಕಮ್ಮಟದಲ್ಲಿ ಭಾಗವಹಿಸಲು ಅವಕಾಶ ಇರುತ್ತದೆ.

  • ಕಾರ್ಯಾಗಾರ ಮತ್ತು ಮಾರ್ಗದರ್ಶನ ಅವಧಿ: ಕಾರ್ಯಾಗಾರ ಮತ್ತು ಮಾರ್ಗದರ್ಶನದ ಕೆಲಸಗಳಿಗಾಗಿ ಮೂರು ವಾರಗಳ ಅವಧಿಯನ್ನು ನಿಗದಿಪಡಿಸಲಾಗಿದ್ದು, 2025 ಆಗಸ್ಟ್ ಎರಡನೇ ವಾರದಿಂದ ಆರಂಭಗೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತದೆ.

ಕಾರ್ಯಾಗಾರದ ಕುರಿತು:

ವಿಜ್ಞಾನ ಮತ್ತು ಕಲೆಗಳ ನಡುವಿನ ‘ಇಬ್ಬಗೆಯ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿಗಳ’ ನಡುವಿನ ಅಂತರವನ್ನು ಕಡಿಮೆ ಮಾಡುವ ಉದ್ದೇಶದಿಂದ, ಈ ಕಮ್ಮಟವನ್ನು ನಡೆಸಲಾಗುತ್ತಿದೆ. ವಿಜ್ಞಾನ ಮತ್ತು ಕಲೆ ಎಲ್ಲರ ಒಡನಾಟದಲ್ಲಿ ರೂಪುಗೊಳ್ಳುವಂತಾದ್ದು.  ಅದನ್ನು ಸೃಜನಶೀಲವಾಗಿ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಪಡಿಸಲು ಮತ್ತು ಅದರ ನೈತಿಕ, ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕ ಅಂಶಗಳತ್ತ ಚಿಂತನೆ ನಡೆಸುವಂತೆ ಈ ಕಮ್ಮಟ ಉತ್ತೇಜಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.

ಕಾರ್ಯಾಗಾರದಲ್ಲಿ ಪಾಲ್ಗೊಳ್ಳುವ ಅಭ್ಯರ್ಥಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಆರ್ಕೈವ್‍‌ ನಲ್ಲಿರುವ  ಫೋಟೋಗಳು, ಪತ್ರಗಳು ಹಾಗೂ ಮೌಖಿಕ ಇತಿಹಾಸದ ದಾಖಲಾತಿಗಳನ್ನು ಅಧ್ಯಯನ ಮಾಡುವಂತೆ ಹಾಗೂ ಮತ್ತು ಇವುಗಳಿಂದ ಪ್ರೇರೇಪಿತ ವೈಜ್ಞಾನಿಕ ನಾಟಕಗಳನ್ನು ರಚಿಸುವಂತೆ ತರಬೇತಿ ನೀಡಲಾಗುವುದು.ಇದರ ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಒಡನಾಟದ, ಸಹಭಾಗಿತ್ವದ ಕಲಿಕೆಗೆ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಪ್ರೋತ್ಸಾಹ ಕೊಡಲಾಗುವುದು.

Archives at NCBS ಭಾರತದ ಸಮಕಾಲೀನ ವಿಜ್ಞಾನ ಇತಿಹಾಸದ ಸಾರ್ವಜನಿಕ ಸಂಗ್ರಹ ಕೇಂದ್ರವಾಗಿದೆ. ಇದರಲ್ಲಿ 55ಕ್ಕೂ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಸಂಗ್ರಹಗಳಲ್ಲಿ 3.5 ಲಕ್ಷಕ್ಕೂ ಅಧಿಕ ದಾಖಲೆಗಳು ಇವೆ ಇವುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಹಳೆಯ ಕೈಬರಹ ದಾಖಲೆಗಳು, ಛಾಯಾಚಿತ್ರಗಳು, ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳು, ,ಮೌಖಿಕ ಇತಿಹಾಸ, ವಿಜ್ಞಾನ ಸಲಕರಣೆಗಳು, ಪತ್ರಗಳು, ಹಾಗೂ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರ ಮತ್ತು ಪ್ರಯೋಗಾಲಯದ ಟಿಪ್ಪಣಿಗಳು ಸೇರಿವೆ.

ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ NCBS ಆವರಣದಲ್ಲಿರುವ 2000 ಚದರ ಅಡಿಗಳ ಈ ಆಧುನಿಕ ಕೇಂದ್ರವು ಸಂಶೋಧನೆ, ಪ್ರದರ್ಶನ, ಸಂಗ್ರಹಣಾ ಪ್ರಕ್ರಿಯೆ, ಧ್ವನಿಮುದ್ರಣ ಹಾಗೂ ತಾಂತ್ರಿಕ ನಿರ್ವಹಣೆಗೆ ಅವಕಾಶ ಕಲ್ಪಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಖ್ಯಾತ ವಿಜ್ಞಾನಿಗಳು ಹಾಗೂ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಗಳ ಐತಿಹಾಸಿಕ ದಾಖಲೆಗಳಿವೆ. ಉದಾಹರಣೆಗೆ: ಒಬೇದ್ ಸಿದ್ದೀಕಿ, ಟಿಎಸ್‌ಜಿ ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರಿ, ಕೆಎಸ್ ಕೃಷ್ಣನ್, ಲೆಸ್ಲಿ ಕೋಲ್ಮನ್, ಎಂಎಸ್ ಸ್ವಾಮಿನಾಥನ್ ಮತ್ತು ಇತರರ ದಾಖಲೆಗಳು.

ಇಲ್ಲಿನ ಪತ್ರಗಳು, ಛಾಯಾಚಿತ್ರಗಳು, ದಿನಚರಿಗಳು, ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರ ಟಿಪ್ಪಣಿ ಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಮೌಖಿಕ ಇತಿಹಾಸದ ದಾಖಲೆಗಳು ಭಾರತೀಯ ವಿಜ್ಞಾನ ಇತಿಹಾಸದ ಅನೇಕ ಕಥೆಗಳನ್ನು ಹೊರಹೊಮ್ಮಿಸುತ್ತವೆ. ಮರೆತ ಹಾಗೂ ಮರೆಯಲ್ಪಟ್ಟ ಪ್ರಯೋಗಗಳಿಂದ ಹಿಡಿದು ವೈಯಕ್ತಿಕ ಹೋರಾಟಗಳವರೆಗಿನ ಕಥಾನಕಗಳು ನಾಟಕ ರೂಪದ ವಿಶ್ಲೇಷಣೆಗೆ ಸಾಕಷ್ಟು ವಸ್ತುಗಳನ್ನು ನೀಡುತ್ತವೆ. ವಿಜ್ಞಾನವನ್ನು ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಭಾವನಾತ್ಮಕ ಹಾಗೂ ಸೃಜನಶೀಲ ರೀತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳಿಗೆ ತಲುಪಿಸಬೇಕೆಂದಿರುವ ಶಿಕ್ಷಕರಿಗೆಂದು ಇಂತಹ ವಿಶೇಷ ಕಮ್ಮಟವನ್ನು ನಡೆಸಲಾಗುತ್ತಿದೆ.

 

 

ಅರ್ಹತೆ:

  • ಪ್ರಾಥಮಿಕದಿಂದ ಪ್ರೌಢ ಶಾಲೆ ತನಕ ಯಾವುದೇ ವಿಷಯವನ್ನು ಬೋಧಿಸುವ ಶಿಕ್ಷಕರು ( ಅವರು ವಿಜ್ಞಾನ ಶಿಕ್ಷಕರೇ ಆಗಬೇಕಾಗಿಲ್ಲ,) 

 

  • ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದ ಯಾವುದೇ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಶಿಕ್ಷಣ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡುವ ಶಿಕ್ಷಕರು ಮಾತ್ರ ಅರ್ಹರಾಗುತ್ತಾರೆ.ಈ ಶಿಕ್ಷಕರು ಕನ್ನಡ ಮತ್ತು ಇಂಗ್ಲೀಷ್ ನಲ್ಲಿ ಸುಲಲಿತವಾಗಿ ಓದಲು ಬರೆಯಲು ಬಲ್ಲವರಾಗಿರಬೇಕು

 

  • ಅರ್ಜಿ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸ ಬಯಸುವವರು ನಾಟಕ ಬರವಣಿಗೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಹೊಸಬರಾಗಿದ್ದರೂ ಅರ್ಜಿ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸಬಹುದು.ಆದರೆ ರಂಗಭೂಮಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ಮೊದಲು ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡಿರುವ ಅನುಭವಗಳನ್ನು ವಿಶೇಷ ಆದ್ಯತೆ ಎಂದು ಪರಿಗಣಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.

 

  • ವಿಜ್ಞಾನ, ರಂಗಭೂಮಿ ಮತ್ತು ವಿಜ್ಞಾನ
    ಇತಿಹಾಸದ ಅಧ್ಯಯನದಲ್ಲಿ ತೀವ್ರ ಆಸಕ್ತಿ ಹೊಂದಿದವರಾಗಿರಬೇಕು ಎಂದು ನಿರೀಕ್ಷಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ

 ಏನನ್ನು ನಿರೀಕ್ಷಿಸಬಹುದು?

  • ಅರ್ಜಿದಾರರಲ್ಲಿ ಐದು ಶಿಕ್ಷಕರನ್ನು ಆಯ್ಕೆ ಮಾಡಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಪ್ರತಿಯೊಬ್ಬ ಶಿಕ್ಷಕರಿಗೂ ಒಬ್ಬ ಮಾರ್ಗದರ್ಶಿ ಜೊತೆಗಾರರಾಗಿರುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಅದು ರಂಗಭೂಮಿ ಅಥವಾ ವಿಜ್ಞಾನ ಶಿಕ್ಷಣ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಅನುಭವವಿರುವ ಮಾರ್ಗದರ್ಶಕರಾಗಿರುತ್ತಾರೆ.
     

  • ಒಂದು ತಿಂಗಳ ಅವಧಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ವೈಯಕ್ತಿಕವಾಗಿ ಮತ್ತು ಆನ್ಲೈನ್ ಸಂವಹನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರತಿ ಜೋಡಿ ಬರಹಗಾರರು ಒದಗಿಸಿರುವ ಆರ್ಕೈವ್ಗಳಿಂದ ಪ್ರೇರಿತವಾದ ಒಂದು ವಿಜ್ಞಾನ ನಾಟಕವನ್ನು ರಚಿಸಿ ನೀಡಬೇಕಾಗುತ್ತದೆ

 

  • ಸಹಭಾಗಿಗಳು ಬರವಣಿಗೆಯ ವಿವಿಧ ಆಯಾಮಗಳನ್ನು ಆರ್ಕೈವಲ್ ಪರಿಶೋಧನೆಗಳನ್ನು ಹೊಸವಿಸ್ತಾರದ ಕಲಿಕೆಗೆ ಅನ್ವಯಗೊಳಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ

 

  • ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿಗೆ ಬರಲು ಪ್ರವಾಸ ವೆಚ್ಚ ಹಾಗೂ ಉಳಿದುಕೊಳ್ಳುವ  ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆ NCBS ಮೂಲಕ ಒದಗಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.
